This is home

A place to do as you choose

At Waratah we recognise that everyone is different. Some of us are night owls, others early birds. Some of us like getting out and active, others would like to read a book. Some of us like classical music, others like hard core rock. Some of us like socialising, others prefer to be alone.

We don’t believe in making participants fit into a system. We want our participants to have choice and control over how they live their lives, including their own routines, activities, and preferences. After all, Waratah is their home, and we are here to facilitate the life they choose.

For this reason, we seek first to understand the preferences of the participants and then seek ways to accommodate.

Home-Style Accommodation

It is our mission to give our participants a home that creates a warm, calming environment. We look for unique properties that have a homely feel through the layout, décor and gardens while meeting the needs of participants. Many of our participants enjoy ensuite rooms and private balconies – their own private sanctuary.

Support for Daily Living

Whether it be help with daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, showering, or dressing, the team at Waratah offers as little or as much support as needed. We gently try and encourage the development of skills for independent living to give our participants freedom, autonomy, and a sense of self accomplishment.

Community Participation

Many of our participants appreciate the opportunity to attend work-based activities outside of home or to attend various community-based social activities. Where this type of activity is appealing to the participant, the team at Waratah is there to provide support to aid participation.

Group and Centre Based Activities

The team at Waratah seeks to understand the hobbies, activities and pastimes that are of interest to our participants and looks for ways to make these activities accessible. Whether it be music, gardening, art, cards, sports, we create opportunities to participate at home as well as in the community.

Healthy Living Options

We try and create opportunities for healthy living given the benefits for physical and mental health. We take a balanced approach to a healthy diet and provide a range of healthy meals.
We also consciously create opportunities for physical activity. Whether it be walking the puppy dog, playing ball in the yard or organised activity there are options available for those who choose.

Social Connection

Friends and family are always welcome at Waratah and can visit without appointment, once registered. For those participants who would like to socialise with others, we create opportunities to share meals together, watch television, play board games, participate in joint activities and outings.

“Theo is a strong advocate for Don's needs and has on many occasions acted on behalf of Don in circumstances not many others would have done so. I am more than pleased to be endorsing Theo.”
